What is a Community Pub?
Community Pubs are springing up right across the country. Here's what they're all about.
The way the community pub model operates is simple. People can donate money, or buy a shareholding in the pub. The funds raised are used to buy the pub from the current owners and provide working capital to recruit a landlord who runs the pub.
We’ve been taking advice from a charity called the Plunkett Foundation. They specialise in helping rural communities acquire their local pubs. So far they’ve assisted over 150 pubs across Britain with many more in the pipeline.
To enable us to create a community pub we have set up the Drewsteignton Community Society.
You can become a member of the Drewsteignton Community Society by purchasing a minimum of 100 shares at a cost of £1 each – a shareholding with a value of £100. As a member you will have a vote at an annual meeting when members of the steering group will be elected.
The Drewsteignton Community Society will employ a manager to run the pub, other staff as required and a part-time events manager. Profits will be used to develop the community offer. When possible, interest will be paid to shareholders.
